In New Zealand, a different kind of state of emergency has been imposed after a huge storm caused widespread destruction in several towns.
The storm, which was downgraded from a tropical cyclone on Tuesday, lashed the centre of the country, causing floods in the city of Christchurch and other provinces. Torrential rain on the South Island also caused massive landslips which cut off thousands of residents and left hundreds of tourists stranded.
