China’s defense ministry has welcomed the end of a standoff between Chinese and Indian troops in the Donglang area on their border, and warned India to draw lesson from it.
“It is in the joint interests of both countries and their people to maintain peace and stability in the border region.”
Wu Qian made the comments hours after China's foreign ministry said that China and India had agreed to a de-escalation in tensions following India’s withdrawal of troops from Donglang.
As of 2:30 p.m. on Monday, India had withdrawn all border personnel and equipment, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying at a daily news briefing.
Hua added that China would “continue to safeguard its territorial sovereignty based on historical boundary treaties.”
She also called for India to "respect principles of international law and historical boundary treaties, and maintain border peace along with China."
Earlier on Monday, Indian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying "expeditious disengagement" at the site was ongoing.
Soldiers from the two sides had been facing off since June in a dispute based on road construction rights.
