Severe storm causes chaos in Christchurch

Christchurch, the largest city on New Zealand’s South Island, has declared a state of emergency amid a severe storm that lasted over 24 hours. Hundreds of homes across the country have been evacuated, highways are cut off and soldiers have been called in to help provide emergency services.
According to Reuters, The New Zealand Defense Force mobilized additional troops overnight on Friday, bringing its total deployment to at least a dozen trucks and 140 personnel for emergency services and help rescue those trapped by rising flood waters.
The state of emergency was declared after the Heathcote River burst its banks and flooded southern parts of the city. It is the fourth area to do so after the severe weather caused widespread flooding.
