Brazilian president remains tough on economic reform amid political turmoil

Brazil’s President Michel Temer remains tough on unpopular economic measures to cover his country's budget deficit, despite facing a vote in Congress next week to determine whether he will face trial on corruption charges
Temer announced a decree that roughly doubled taxes on fuel as part of an effort to reduce a government deficit, making Brazilians pay more for basic needs.
In June, thousands of angry citizens took to the streets to protest against one of Temer’s reforms that made the country's labor laws more flexible, threatening job security.
Temer knew how unpopular his policies were, but still emphasized that his government “doesn’t lie, it does not give false data, it is a real government”.
Moreover, while Temer waited for the result of the congressional vote, prosecutors are expected to file two more charges against him, including obstruction of justice and criminal association.
