Flood control efforts continued in central China’s Hunan Province, where the water levels of many major rivers and lakes were exceeding warning levels. Residents, who had to leave their homes behind for safety reasons, are now waiting to see if and when they can return.
CGTN’s Yang Jinghao reported on what caused part of a dike to collapse on Monday morning in the same district. However, the authorities worked hard to contain the threat. So far, there have been no casualties, but many houses have been submerged. Residents are staying in temporary shelters, provided by the local government, or in tents along the road. For many, all they can do now is sit and wait for the waters to recede.
The situation isn’t stable, and there are concerns the water might rise further. The Xiangjiang, which locals call their mother river, was at a record high in Changsha at 39.51 meters on Monday morning. It has been gradually receding from this, but the danger is far from over.
