Chinese President Xi Jinping has wrapped up his inspection tour in central China's Hubei Province. He called for efforts to win the "three tough battles", a term that has been carried out in this year's government work report, referring to curbing major financial risks, eradicating poverty, and controlling pollution. Yang Zhao has the details.
On Thursday morning, Xi inspected two leading chipmakers in a high-tech development zone in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province.
The area, dubbed "China's Optics Valley", is the world's largest R&D and manufacturing base for optical communication equipment.
President Xi first visited FiberHome Technologies Group, which leads the world in R&D and production of optical communication equipment of "ultra-large capacity" which enables nearly 7 billion telephone calls at the same time using just a single optical fiber.
XI JINPING CHINESE PRESIDENT "Core technologies and major scientific instruments must be in our own hands. Research and development cannot rely on the work by some body else but ourselves."
President Xi then visited Wuhan Xinxin Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. to inspect a national memory production base and assembly lines of integrated circuits.
In workshops, he listened to reports about the smart manufacturing of chips, urging businesses to make major breakthroughs in chip technology and challenge the new heights in the global semiconductor industry.
China's two centenary goals cannot be delivered easily, President Xi said, noting that both the opportunities and challenges in front of the country are unprecedented. He called on every Chinese to make a bigger contribution to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
At noon, President Xi inspected Qingheju, a modern community developed from a former shanty town. He said there are still some daunting tasks in the redevelopment of former shanty areas and a city with modern skyscrapers on one side and shanty areas one the other side is not allowed.
While visiting a community center, President Xi urged more efforts to reform and innovate governance at the community level to offer more services to the public.
XI JINPING CHINESE PRESIDENT MANDARIN "The CPC central committee has paid great attention to community work. Doing a good job in the community is to serve the people."
On Saturday afternoon, President Xi listened to work reports of the CPC Hubei Provincial Committee and the Hubei Provincial Government.
He said that pushing high quality development is the fundamental requirement for good economic work. During the inspection, President Xi also stressed that the rural revitalization strategy is central for China to address issues relating to agriculture, rural areas and residents. He said local governments should treat people's wellbeing as their top priority, calling for attaching great importance to helping the impoverished and continuing targeted poverty reduction and alleviation measures.
