Thousands fired and blacklisted following Turkey coup
[]
Hundreds of thousands of people in Turkey have lost their jobs because of the government’s wide-ranging crackdown after the the failed military coup attempt last July.
At least 50,000 people have been jailed, and more than 150,000 others have either been fired or dismissed from their jobs after decrees. Teachers have borne the brunt of official action which has seen them blacklisted based on allegations that they were involved in the uprising.
Opposition party leaders in Turkey and many EU countries have criticized the Turkish government for the scope of the crackdown, some claiming the government has used the coup as an excuse to silence dissidents.
Demonstrators against the firings have been collecting signatures to present to the government. They’re also calling for an end to the decree, reinstatement of their jobs and an end to the state of emergency, which President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had just extended.
