The fifth World Internet Conference, also known as the Wuzhen Summit has just concluded in the water town of Wuzhen in eastern China's Zhejiang province. From theories to practical applications, the event showcased the achievements leading the industry. CGTN reporter Zheng Yibing recaps the three-day event and shows us what to look forward to.
Smart devices, intelligent interactions. This year's conference focused more on the deep integration of the internet and our world. It aims to make cyberspace better serve the development of traditional industries and economies.
ZHUANG RONGWEN MINISTER, CYBERSPACE ADMINISTRATION OF CHINA "With the efforts from all sides, the conference analyzed the opportunities and challenges we are facing, as we enter the digital world. We encourage all nations to further improve internet infrastructure, the digital economy, cyber security and internet culture exchanges."
Experts say the conference yielded fruitful results. 15 world leading Internet scientific and technological achievements were unveiled. They were selected out of over 400 projects and programs, with the aim of reaching faster internet speeds, more digital profits and better web security. Two reports were also released on internet development both in China and the world at large, hoping to give references for research and analysis on industry trends.
YANG SHUZHEN PRESIDENT, CHINA ACADEMY OF CYBERSPACE STUDIES "The reports particularly mention the laws and regulations on the internet since such issues are more prominent, and they also include new contents on hot spots, such as artificial intelligence, big data, and information protection."
Another hot topic during the conference: new internet governance. Global officials and scholars expressed their thoughts on deeper exchanges and cooperation, despite failing to reach a common ground, at least for now.
VIVIANE REDING FMR VICE-PRESIDENT OF EUROPEAN COMMISSION "It is in the interest of everybody to join forces and try common ways to regulate it and not to overregulate it."
JOSEPH WAKABA MUCHERU CABINET SECRETARY OF MINISTRY OF INFORMATION, COMMUNICATIONS AND TECHNOLOGY, THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA "All these aspirations allow us to see how we can work very closely with China, which has many top companies in the world, that produce goods very good at content development, security, all these aspects."
And participants hope the theme of creating a digital world for mutual trust and collective governance will be passed on and treasured by all.
ZHENG YIBING WUZHEN, ZHEJIANG PROVINCE "More than half of the world's population is online now. That number is fast increasing. And the trends and discussions on a dynamic and healthy internet will be the core for the future Wuzhen summits to come. Zheng Yibing, CGTN, Wuzhen, in Zhejiang Province."
