We begin with the just-concluded G20 summit where Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump met on the sidelines - once again raising hopes of a final trade deal between the world's two largest economies. CGTN's Zheng Yibing tells us more about their talks in Osaka.
A much-anticipated meeting.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump agreed to a new cease-fire in a year-long trade war, adding that stalled trade talks would resume, and the US would hold off on threatened additional tariffs on Chinese goods. President Xi called for bilateral ties based on cooperation and stability.
XI JINPING CHINESE PRESIDENT "Today, I am willing to exchange ideas with you on the fundamentals related with the development of China-US ties, to move forward to the next phase, and promote relations based on coordination, cooperation and stability."
While Xi called for a fair treatment for Chinese companies and students in the US, Trump said his country is willing to form better ties with China.
This was further elaborated in the press conferences that followed.
WANG XIAOLONG G20 SPECIAL ENVOY, CHINESE MFA "We both hope that the world economy can still achieve stable growth and we are looking forward to fostering an open, fair, predictable and rule-based environment. It is good for our countries and the world economy."
President Trump even made more concessions to address China's concerns.
ZHENG YIBING OSAKA, JAPAN "As the Chinese delegation said, an agreement on resumption of trade talks between the two countries can also mean the two sides have reached common ground on more bilateral and international issues. And that's the only way, as they say, for the two countries to find mutual benefits and win-win cooperation. Zheng Yibing, CGTN, OSAKA, JAPAN."
