Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe's president for nearly four decades, has stepped down.
“President Mugabe did not voluntarily resign. He was force into this position. This was not his intention,” said Piers Pigou, Senior Consultant at the Southern Africa International Crisis Group. “This has been a long time coming and long time overdue.”
Zimbabwe's former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to be sworn in as the country's president on Friday. Parliament Speaker Jacob Mudenda made the announcement in the capital Harare, a day after Mugabe resigned.
Mnangagwa, who was also named leader of the ruling ZANU-PF party on Sunday, returned home on Wednesday. He fled the country two weeks ago after being dismissed by Mugabe. His dismissal sparked the military power grab that forced Mugabe to end his long reign.
“Whether he would look outside of the party or not, there’s being a significant call from a number of areas that he should be magnanimous, should look for some kind of inclusiveness,” Piers said.
