In the trade war, Beijing is blaming Washington for the tensions and failing to keep its promise. Our reporter, Wang Hui, explains.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce responded to criticism from some American government officials that China should take responsibility for failed trade negotiations. The spokesman denied that the comments reflected the facts. He said China was always sincere and willing to achieve a win-win result during the past four rounds of negotiations. And it was the US who broke the deals.
GAO FENG, SPOKESMAN MINISTRY OF COMMERCE "On May 19, the two sides have reached a consensus but on May 29, the US abandoned the consensus. In early June, the two sides agreed to energy and agriculture cooperation but on June 15, the US abandoned the consensus again. On July 6, the US launched the trade war, and got worse on July 11. It's regrettable that the US has failed to keep faith, and closed the door to talks between the two sides."
At the press conference, I also asked the spokesman about Beijing's latest reaction to America's measures.
WANG HUI BEIJING "The US recently announced that they would impose an extra 10% of tariffs on Chinese goods to the time of 200-billion US dollars. And China lodged a complaint on Monday to the World Trade Organization, following the recent complaint about the US' early round of levies on $34 billion worth of Chinese goods. Would you please provide more details about the latest complaint? And why did you choose to make this move?"
GAO FENG, SPOKESMAN MINISTRY OF COMMERCE "This is a necessary measure to safeguard the basic principles of the World Trade Organization. Whether we need a multilateral trading system is a big matter of principle. We firmly believe, the rules made and the multilateral trade system created together by global trading partners, should and must be abided by and maintained."
WANG HUI BEIJING "The spokesman with the Commerce Ministry also said the trade war triggered by the US will affect the global industrial chain, and even damage global companies and people, including some American ones. But China is confident in facing this kind of clash, because of the strong driving force of its reform and opening up, its huge domestic market, and steady and healthy economic development."
