China's Summer Economy: Continuous heat and thriving tourism
Updated 16:55, 15-Jul-2019
Summer in Beijing usually starts in late June, but this year, people have been sweating since May, that's as searing temperatures continue to bake China's capital city. And as it turns out, businesses that offer people short trips away from the heat to cool-off are just as hot as the weather. Our Yin Yue explains.
Summer is here! but when you constantly get days with temperatures above 35 C, "how to get away from the heat" becomes almost a question of survival.
MS.LIU LOCAL RESIDENT "I take more taxis to avoid taking bus or walking to subway stations. It's cooler just to stay in taxis."
MS.WEI LOCAL RESIDENT "I'd go swimming. That's my way of staying cool. Just stay in the water."
MR.XUE LOCAL RESIDENT "I definitely don't want to go outside. I'd stay at home with air-conditioning, take a bath or something."
MS. CHEN LOCAL RESIDENT "It's too hot, I don't even want to go out. I just want to lie still in my room with air-conditioning."
YIN YUE BEIJING "Looks like people have their own ways of 'staying cool', but some businesses saw opportunities that are pretty heated up as well. Data from China's tourism academy shows that in 2018, nearly half of the total 1 billion tourists hit the road to run away from the heat. For 2019, the industry estimates an increase of this trend, and many local governments are upgrading their infrastructure to better receive these tourists."
LIU CHUNSHENG, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF FINANCE AND ECONOMICS "As family income in China keeps growing, especially China now has the largest middle-income group, the consumption capacity & the tendency of consumption upgrade has been growing as well. All these have boosted what we call the 'high-temperature business'. This has also benefitted from the upgrade of our infrastructure system. Social media also plays an indispensable role in stimulating consumption."
YIN YUE BEIJING "Although consecutive high temperate might damage the overall economy, the tourism industry sure has an opportunity to grasp. YY, CGTN, BJ."
