Egypt's president Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi has sworn in a new government - with more women in cabinet than ever before. Adel EL Mahrouky has more from Cairo.
Up until Thursday morning, Defense Minister Sedki Sobhi and Minister of interior Magdy Abdel Ghaffar were believed to be fundamental members of President Abdel Fattah EL Sisi government. Sacking them on Thursday and the chief of intelligence earlier this year indicates the president's desire to restructure the management of the country's entire security file.
TALAAT ISMAL MANAGING DIRECTOR, EL SHOROUK NEWS "Most of the new ministers names were circulating in the media, the shock was in the defense and interior ministers, we didn't expect change in strategic ministries like these. They were the longest serving ministers in the cabinet, EL Sisi wants to infuse new blood to manage the security file. He met both the old ministers and thanked them for their efforts, showing no tension after sacking them."
12 new ministers have been sworn in. Beside the Interior and Defense, service ministries were the dominant in this reshuffle which included, Communication, Civil aviation, Health, agriculture, Domestic Development, environment, Youth & sports, trade and industry, finance and public enterprise. After the appointment of Yasmine Fouad as the Environment Minister, and Hala Zayed in the Health and Population ministry, the new cabinet now has eight women ministers. The highest in Egypt's history.
TALAAT ISMAL MANAGING DIRECTOR, EL SHOROUK NEWS "One-third of the cabinet has changed, many of them were deputies to former minister. We still hoped to see young ministers. We still see ministers in the age group of 40s and 50s. There was hope to younger."
Foreign Minister Sameh Shourky, Investment and international cooperation minister Sahar Nasr and 18 others have retained their positions. The new prime minister Moustafa Madbouli is still holding on to his position in the previous cabinet as Housing minister.
ADEL EL MAHROUKY CAIRO, EGYPT "EL Sisi begins his new presidential term indirectly declaring his discontent from managing the security file and public services. While keeping most of his cabinet unchanged the new government is about to begin another race of economic reform, absorbing public frustrations from that reform with better services and restructuring Egypt's security management.
