The Chinese Foreign Ministry has welcomed the move to hold a summit. CGTN's Sun Ye has the details.
One day after the DPRK leader wrapped up his trip in China, the DPRK and the ROK settled on a date for an upcoming summit, with a Japan-DPRK summit in talks. China's foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang has praised both moves, saying multiple times Thursday that these improvements are what China has been pushing for, that is a resolution through dialogue and negotiation. He further commented that dialogue has now become the theme for peace on the Korean peninsula.
LU KANG SPOKESPERSON, CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY "We appreciate the efforts made by the DPRK and South Korea. As a close neighbor to the Korean Peninsula, China is willing to see the two countries conduct dialogue, improve relations and promote reconciliation. It fulfils the common interests of both sides. It can further ease tensions on the Korean peninsula and promote peace and stability in the region."
SUN YE BEIJING "Lu Kang says the peninsula is taking important steps in the right direction--- And China will continue to work for peace and stability in the region, adding that this is in line with what China promotes Internationally."
For more than a decade now, China has been a major force in maintaining and prompting peace in the region. And its strategies have been clear: that peace should come from, and could only come from political and diplomatic negotiations and dialogue. It goes back to 2003, when the first of six-party talks took place with this end goal in mind. Then, China proposed dual suspension, urging the US and the ROK to suspend military games, and the DPRK to suspend its nuclear tests.
The international community has reacted positively as well. The UN general secretary praised China's constructive role. The Foreign ministry might have their hopes addressed soon as diplomatic efforts continue. Sun Ye, CGTN, Beijing.
