While the Egyptian tourism industry seems to be recovering from numerous incidents over the past five years, one particular resort town on the Red Sea is excelling. CGTN's Adel EL Mahrouky went to discover what's so special about El Gouna.
For years because of political and security instabilities, Egypt's tourism has been suffering. EL Gouna resort Town though is one of the few places in the country that hasn't been as volatile.
ADEL EL MAHROUKY EL GOUNA, EGYPT "As a closed gated 36 square kilometer resort town. EL Gouna has attracted a niche client base, which has made it resistant to the turbulences the tourism industry has seen in Egypt. At times where most hotels reported 20% in occupancy rates, here in El Gouna hotels reported triple that number."
MAHMOUD EL BAROUDI EL GOUNA, GENERAL MANAGER "Gouna is an integrated community, it relies on many sources of revenues generated in the town. So we have people living all year round. We have business owners, we have property owners as well, that either live here or come for vacation reasons, and a portion of it is related to tourism so it's not very vulnerable to changes in the tourism market."
Comparing this town of 2700 rooms to Red Sea resort cities like Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada that have about 100 thousand rooms is unfair. But EL Gouna can be a successful case study for Egyptian tourism.
CHRISTOPHE LAMBRECHT CEO, THREE CORNERS RESORT "The advantage of Gouna is that you'll never find a piece of paper on the ground, you'll never get bothered, you can walk and get to the shops, no one will ever hassle you. If they hassle or bother these people will never be allowed to Gouna anymore. This is why EL Gouna is so special, is one gate, it's like community gate, it's secure, it's safe. I never close my car, I never close my home, so I can tell you where I live."
It's why all year long occupancy rates here are at around 80%, a remarkable number for the Egyptian hotels industry in recent years. And as the market is finally recovering all over Egypt, expectations are that Gouna will boom even more.
MAHMOUD EL BAROUDI EL GOUNA, GENERAL MANAGER "Tourism Market is picking up in Egypt, thankfully because of our ties with tour operators and the concept of Gouna being an integrated community, we are very well positioned to capture a big upside from what is going to happen in the tourism market, so definitely we are planning more and more expansions on that front."
Because of its sustainability-based concept, EL Gouna is like a miniature country, where people can find most of there needs within a reasonable walking distance. From Exotic sports to relaxing beaches and enjoyable nightlife, all surrounded by Hurghada's warm windy weather.
CHRISTOPHE LAMBRECHT CEO, THREE CORNERS RESORT "They feel at home, and it's like home here. I have guests coming three, five and sometimes 10 times a year. It feels home thanks to the employees and thanks to EL Gouna. There are different varieties of restaurants you have here, the variety of bars it's fantastic."
EL Gouna was established 29 years ago. Attracting foreigners to live and invest along with Egyptians, it became a unique place that has brought the best out of that touristic fusion. AMA, CGTN, EL Gouna, Egypt.
