South Korea has announced the country will hold its annual joint military drill with the United States on April 1st.
CHOI HYUN-SOO SOUTH KOREA'S DEFENCE MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON "The drills are slated to begin on April 1, and will be conducted on a similar scale as in previous years. The United Nations Command informed DPRK's military today, March 20, on the schedule of the drills and the stance that this is an annual drill and is defence-oriented."
Seoul said in January it had agreed with Washington to postpone the regular military exercises to ensure a peaceful Olympics. The two militaries usually begin the drills in March, and can involve as many as 17-thousand U.S. troops, and over 300-thousand South Koreans. This year's exercise will be held on a similar scale but without key U.S. strategic assets, such as nuclear-powered aircraft carriers or bombers. The DPRK, which calls the drills a rehearsal for war, has threatened to take "counteraction" against the United States. if the drills are held.
