1 / 4   Having their classrooms turned to rubble was not enough of an excuse for Palestinian students to skip school. Children were pictured sitting on the debris of what used to be Abu Nuwar primary school, reading their books with their backpacks by their side in a show of resistance after Israeli soldiers demolished the school in Jerusalem. /VCG Photo

2 / 4   Israeli troops on Sunday morning razed two classrooms for third and fourth graders, which served 26 children and are funded by the European Union. The tearing down was carried out because of lack of permits issued by Israeli authorities, “which are nearly impossible to obtain,” stated Roberto Valent, the UN’s acting humanitarian coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territory. /VCG Photo

3 / 4   The students are part of a 670-strong Palestinian Bedouin community in the outskirts of Jerusalem in the occupied West Bank. The community lives in uncertainty as practices and policies by Israeli authorities have created a “coercive environment,” Valent noted. He called on Israel to “immediately cease all practices that are directly or indirectly generating a risk of forcible transfer for Palestinians in various parts of the West Bank”. /VCG Photo

4 / 4   This is not the first time the school has been demolished, Russia Today has reported. The Israeli authorities have brought the academic institution down five times in the last two years. /VCG Photo
