Earlier we spoke to Wang Chong, a senior fellow at the Charhar Institute, a China-based think tank. He said despite the mechanism not being perfect, it's helping keep diplomatic efforts on the right track.
LI DONGNING "It is short of something like creating a political commitment to practically prevent from provocative behaviors between the two sides. Do you think this mechanism is actually strong enough to prevent problems from arising between the two countries, in terms maritime and airspace?"
WANG CHONG SENIOR FELLOW, CHARHAR INSTITUTE "Yes, it works."
LI DONGNING "It seems to me more like a dialogue mechanism, instead of a problem-solving mechanism."
WANG CHONG SENIOR FELLOW, CHARHAR INSTITUTE "It can solve some problems, and it can stop any crisis from being rising up at the first moment. It just prevents crisis from happening, it can not promote relations. It can not make it better. It just can make it not worse."
