China on Tuesday said that it hopes Japan will act carefully after the country approved the purchase of two Aegis Ashore land-based systems to counter the "serious and imminent" threat posed by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
"Due to historical reasons, Japan's military security trends have been the common concern of the Asian neighbors and the international community," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying at a regular briefing.
Japan decided on Tuesday it would expand its ballistic missile defense system with US-made ground-based Aegis radar stations and interceptors in response to a growing threat from DPRK missiles.
Hua stressed that China has always believed the issue of missiles has great influence on the global strategic stability and mutual trust between countries.
She noted that countries should consider their own safety interests and respect other countries' reasonable security concerns.
"We hope that Japan will act carefully and play a constructive role in promoting the peace and stability of the region," she added.
