Xu Ying is a pilot flying the J-15 fighter jet onboard the Chinese naval aircraft carrier Liaoning. He was among the first four pilots to take off when President Xi Jinping reviewed the PLA Navy in the South China Sea on Thursday morning.
In an exclusive interview with CGTN, Xu Ying said the job is challenging yet interesting. He enjoyed the feeling of flying amid drifting clouds. In technical terms, he said it's much easier to take off on the carrier's flight deck than to land on preset areas. Therefore, more precision work is needed to make sure the aircraft catches the correct arresting cables.
Xu Ying's flying career started 17 years ago when he began serving in the PLA Air Force. He told CGTN that he hopes to fly the next-generation carrier-borne fighter which will have more advanced operating systems and stealthy features.
The veteran encourages young people in China to join him serving on the aircraft carrier, and contribute their share to serving the people and the country.
