BRICS members will be adopting an official counter-terrorism strategy at this year's summit. Our correspondent in India, Ravinder Bawa spoke to some experts to find out how it will work.

The stage is all set for leaders of five nations to endorse new agreements like the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Strategy. The BRICS cooperation will focus on key areas of stability, security, fighting terrorism and solving urgent regional conflicts.

RAJAN KUMAR Professor, School of International Studies, JNU "Controlling the finance sharing the information and cyber-attack has become an important issue as many countries are facing the problem of cyber-attack through the terrorist organisation so these are the broader areas where you can expect some statement in the BRICS meeting."

BRICS Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism was formed in 2016 with an aim to address the menace of terrorism.

ANIL TRIGUNAYAT Former Diplomat "We started the first working group on terrorism and looked at the problem from the ambit of BRICS. A lot of work has been done since then and the essential aspects have remained as to sort an analysis of the problem."

The strategy to be adopted reaffirms that it is the primary responsibility of states to prevent and combat terrorism.

RAJAN KUMAR Professor, School of International Studies, JNU "One is to build a consensus on how to understand terrorism and the second one is how to tackle the issue of radicalization because we are talking of BRICS countries and they face two types of terrorism one is global like Isis and other is regional in its presence."

ANIL TRIGUNAYAT Former Diplomat "No single state, no single country can fight alone."

The draft strategy reflects fundamental aspects of respect for sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs,

KARIN COSTA VAZQUEZ Professor, Diplomatic Practice "Countries should not cross each other's red lines and not focus on conflicting agendas and focus on positive agendas it is with this principle in mind that these types of talks in the realm of security and realm of economy are important."

The adopting of the counter terrorism strategy brings the grouping another step closer to strengthening the cooperation to deal with current challenges. Ravinder Bawa, CGTN, Delhi.
