China will hold the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations in Beijing, beginning May 15th. The meeting will focus on the exchange and mutual learning of Asia civilizations. Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the event and deliver a keynote speech. This morning, the Chinese authorities briefed the media on more details of the conference. CGTN's Wu Guoxiu has this story.
'Civilization' is a broad term. And it'll be at the heart of next week's inaugural Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations. The multi-cultural event will be a celebration of differences, yet for leaders and delegates from 47 Asian nations and beyond, it'll also be a chance to find common ground.
XU LIN, DEPUTY HEAD PUBLICITY DEPT., CPC CENTRAL COMMITTEE "Representatives from 47 Asian and world countries, including government officials, celebrities from educational institutions, film and television think tanks, media and tourism, all together more than 2000 people will attend the opening ceremony and sub-forms. And culture celebrities will take part in the Asian cultural carnival, Asia civilization week and more. Cambodia, Greece, Singapore, Sir Lanka, Armenian, Mongolia, and other countries' heads of states, leaders from UNESCO and other international organizations, will attend the conference."
Asian civilization tours, cultural exhibitions; even tourism fairs and food festivals will be in full swing. On the Chinese side, attendees will see and taste the very best of cities like Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu.
The event comes after President Xi Jinping twice proposed such a conference in 2014 and 15, in the hopes of boosting regional understanding and enhancing cooperation.
The attending delegates will exchange views on multiple platforms. Media organizations, cultural and religious groups and NGOs will also join.
XU LIN, DEPUTY HEAD PUBLICITY DEPT., CPC CENTRAL COMMITTEE "The conference is expected to have rich results. Some documents will be issued based on the major consensus reached during the conference. It will present a bright prospect of exchanges and mutual learning among Asian civilizations and other civilizations of the world. At the same time, in the areas like media, think tanks, tourism, film, television, and cultural relic protection, bilateral and multilateral initiatives and agreements will be signed. The result of major projects and research will be announced during the conference."
As the official logo for the Conference indicates, the six petals of the peony flower represent the six geographical zones in Asia.
The abstract human form creates a visual effect of hand-in-hand communication between Asian people.
WU GUOXIU BEIJING "In his recently published article, President Xi called for a broadening of different civilizations, and the need to draw wisdom and nourishment from them. The upcoming conference aims to foster exchanges between Asian civilizations, learn from each other and establish a community with a shared future. Wu Guoxiu CGTN, Beijing."
