China has sent its condolences to Mexico following an earthquake which left more than 200 people dead, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said on Wednesday.
A magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck the central state of Morelos on Tuesday.
The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue to recover people trapped under rubble from collapsed buildings.
"China has paid attention to the earthquake and the heavy casualties it has caused," Lu said during a press conference in Beijing.
"China believes that the Mexican people can overcome the disaster and rebuild their lives," he added.
Lu said that a number of people from Taiwan were among those trapped following the disaster and that one was reportedly injured.
"The Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy in Mexico will continue to pay attention to the disaster and offer help to Chinese citizens," he said.
