Premier Li Keqiang and the newly-elected vice premiers held a press conference at the close of the NPC meeting on Tuesday. Premier Li took questions from journalists from both home and abroad. CGTN's Su Yuting reports from the Golden Hall inside the Great Hall of the People.
From politics to the economy, from social welfare to diplomacy, Premier Li Keqiang has answered 15 questions covering a wide range of topics during the press conference that has lasted for two hours.
Premier Li Keqiang said China will open up even more to the world, stressing that it is a two-way street.
LI KEQIANG CHINESE PREMIER "With our economy so integrated with the world's, closing our door would only block China's own way. We aim to further bring down overall import tariffs, with slashing rates for important day-to-day consumer goods. We also plan to phase out tariffs for pharmaceuticals, especially the much-needed ones that fight cancer. I also want to emphasize that opening up needs to be a two-way street, just as it takes both sides to paddle a boat to move forward. Otherwise it may just keep spinning around in the same place."
Premier Li also told the press China has no intention to pursue expansion.
LI KEQIANG CHINESE PREMIER "China has achieved its development in a peaceful international environment. I want to emphasize two points, one: China will not seek expansion. It is now a developing country and it has no intention to pursue expansion. What China wants is to develop relations with all other countries and regions on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefits, and to work with others to build a community with a shared future."
Premier Li also addressed relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, saying he was looking to pursue the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and would not tolerate any attempt to separate Taiwan from China.
Questions concerning International affairs were also addressed, such as the progress made on the Korean Peninsula recently. Premier Li said all parties should take concrete actions toward denuclearization.
Premier Li Keqiang pointed out that China doesn't want a trade war with the United States. Li Keiqiang also said he will consider paying an official visit to Japan during the China-Japan-ROK leaders' meeting later this year.
SU YUTING BEIJING "This year marks the 40th anniversary of reform and opening-up. It's also a crucial year for securing a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society for continuing to implement the 13th Five Year Plan. Premier Li said China will strengthen comprehensive reform, boost high quality growth, and make sure the people's government will not let people down. Su Yuting, CGTN, Beijing."
