Under the name of "Systems", artist Lin Tianmiao's solo exhibition is now at the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai. It covers the artist's early installation works from 1999, as well as his latest creations and manuscripts. Huang Yuanqing reports.
From the second floor to the sixth floor, there are seven works in the exhibition. Each one is independent of the others. From "Day-Dreamer", "Reaction", and "High!!!", Lin used thread, pictures and digital devices to create a magical world for viewers to experience. One of the highlights is the large glass installation called "My Garden", which was created especially for this exhibition. Made by glass tubes, the "trees" and "plants" in the garden circulate green liquid with pumps underneath the floor.
LIN TIANMIAO ARTIST "Maybe you see glass as a container, but I see it more as liquid. Liquid has many different types of forms, like water, blood, and oil. Each of them has a different color, condition and consistency. So I think it's quite a special experience to learn and study this topic."
As a member of the Rockbund Art Museum Advisory Committee, consulting curator Alexandra Munroe is very much aware of the historical integrity of the building, so she recommended leaving the space as open as possible since she believes in this building, less is more.
ALEXANDRA MUNROE CONSULTING CURATOR "My recommendation to Tianmiao was to keep the building as open as possible. No walls, don't cover the windows, because this building looks best when it's naked. And we wanted to present the works that each work has its own individual experience. The viewers can encounter each work on its own terms and that they work very well together in space."
The exhibition will run until August 26th. Tickets cost 50 yuan each.
