And now let's meet the star of "Street Dance of China", 29-year-old Wuhan native Han Yu. He has dedicated more than half of his life to street dancing, and now he's gaining nationwide recognition thanks to the reality show. He ended up winning the final competition and was crowned the champion of season one. But behind the lights and the cameras, Han's road to fame was lined with hardship. Let's take a closer look at the "Almighty Dancer".
For Han Yu, dancing is an essential part of life. He's been dancing for 15 years. He sees his craft as a member of his family.
HAN YU DANCER "I've always been sensitive to music, ever since I was a child. For me, dancing started out as a hobby. Now it's more like my family. It's been part of my growth, and game me strength."
Han first took up dancing at the age of 13. He saw a teacher dancing at a shopping mall and decided to pick it up. He learned a lot from that same teacher.
HU HAOLIANG HAN YU'S TEACHER "He didn't dance very well at the beginning. But he is more hard working than others. He often keeps practicing 10 or 20 songs, repeating every gesture, and even in the summer, he would never tire."
Han Yu went to Shanghai to pursue his dream when he was 15. He was alone, and it was far from easy.
HAN YU DANCER "Everything is very expensive in Shanghai. For the first year, I ate nothing but noodles and water. My first job was as a teaching assistant. Afterwards I began to attend dancing competitions where someone asked me to be the judge. Then my job changed from a teaching assistant to a formal dancing teacher."
Through all the tough times, Han says he never gave up. He tells his students to follow their dreams.
HAN YU DANCER "I hope that through our efforts, more people can see subcultures like hip hop so they can understand it better."
Fifteen years of persistence, and now, he's the almighty dancer. Han says he will stay dedicated, and help mentor a new generation of Chinese hip hop dancers.
