After meeting with President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit, Trump briefed the press on their agreement to resume trade talks. He called Beijing a strategic partner and praised President Xi. Trump also expressed confidence a final deal could be struck with China. CGTN's Nathan King was at the news conference in Osaka and has this report.
U.S. President Trump has been on a charm offensive in Osaka and that even extended to the press! In a news conference that stretched 90 minutes Trump said his most important meeting of the week had led to an agreement to restart negotiations.
Trump confirmed that telecommunications giant Huawei will be able to resume purchases of hi-tech U.S. components.
Details on the deal will follow but Trump said that China had agreed to purchase agricultural goods while negotiations continue. Trump responded to a request from President Xi to pledge better visa access to Chinese students and in a language not used in Washington recently, he called China a potential strategic partner.
NATHAN KING OSAKA, JAPAN "While trade negotiations have stalled before, the U.S. President's positive comments are a significant shift in tone and perhaps substance when it comes to negotiate with China. As the U.S. President often says -- we will see what happens. Nathan King, CGTN, Osaka."
