Russian natural gas transit via Ukrainian pipelines to European countries rose to a six-year-high in the first eight months of this year, Ukrainian state-run Ukrtransgaz Company said Friday.
From January through August, Ukraine pumped a total of 61.95 billion cubic meters of Russian gas to Europe, up 23.4 percent from the same period a year ago, Ukrtransgaz said in a statement, without giving the reasons for the increase.
Last year, Russian gas transit through the Ukrainian territory westwards increased by 22.5 percent to 82.2 billion cubic meters, mainly due to high demand for the fuel in Europe.
The gas transit agreement between Ukraine and Russia is set to expire in 2019.
