Pakistan is among the fastest growing e-commerce markets in the world. Currently valued at an estimated 120 million US dollars, the country's e-commerce sector is multiplying in size every year. Our correspondent Danial Khan has this report.
In Pakistan, E-commerce has had a slow start, but is gaining ground due to the growing number of internet users as well as government efforts for digital inclusion.
ANUSHA RAHMAN AHMAD KHAN MINISTER OF STATE FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & TELECOMMUNICATION "As we are rolling the infrastructure, we are also making five hundred telecenters and we are also working on providing mobile broadband, providing access to people, and also at the same time working on providing affordable connectivity."
Pakistan's internet penetration, estimated at 18% currently, is the real facilitator for the recent growth in e-commerce. Giants like Draz.PK, zameen.com and Yayvo among others have made their mark in the Pakistani online arena. Real estate, vehicles, household items, clothes and electronics are bought online. But recently I met Saif and Ali, architects by profession. Only a year ago, they came up with a joint venture called "Banjaiga", which literally translates to "it shall be built". Their company provides an online platform to people who are looking to build their homes.
ALI RAHMAN KHAN CO-FOUNDER, BANJAIGA "In essence we are bringing all the stakeholders together, on a curated platform, connecting the various elements of the construction eco-system. we want to make construction fun and easy, through trust, transparency and clarity."
All the way from the pre-construction to post, their company gives cost estimations, architectural services, refers materials, and construction teams.
ABBAS ALI PROCUREMENT MANAGER "There is a lot of price and quality variation in the building material marketplace. We ensure price and quality transparency for our clients."
SAHAR LODHI WEB DEVELOPER "We have developed integrated unique software tools like cost estimator and project management tool, procurement dashboard and dashboard for site manager and project manager."
The e-sector is dubbed a whole new marketplace, with a high growth prospect in the future, especially after the global giant Alibaba Group's interest in investing in Pakistan's e-commerce sector.
DANIAL KHAN ISLAMABAD There are already a few big time players established in the e-commerce landscape in Pakistan. However, they are still exploring the low hanging fruits business models, like selling consumer items and electronics, online. Experts believe that there are tremendous opportunities for unique indigenous businesses which combine local knowledge with existing e-commerce frameworks. And with the right focus, they can hugely benefit from the upcoming wave of technological advancements. Danial Khan, CGTN, Islamabad.
