South Korean media report DPRK leader Kim Jong Un will arrive in Singapore on June 10th -- two days ahead of the historic summit with US President Donald Trump. On Thursday, Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan arrived in Pyongyang to prepare for the meeting. Our correspondent Jack Barton in Seoul has more.
JACK BARTON SEOUL "The top diplomats of the D.P.R.K. and Singapore held talks in Pyongyang on Thursday and Friday ahead of the highly anticipated summit between DPRK leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump. According to D.P.R.K. state media, Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho and his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan exchanged in-depth views on further developing friendly relations between the two countries ahead of the summit while meeting at the Mansudae Assembly Hall on Thursday. Balakrishnan's trip to Pyongyang is seen as an effort to work further with DPRK officials to fine-tune details on security as well as protocol arrangements for the summit that is to be held in Singapore on Tuesday.
On Friday Balakrishnan was expected to meet with the president of the Supreme People's Assembly Presidium Kim Yong Nam, who is also the country's nominal head of state and was a key member of the delegation responsible for the warming of inter-Korean relations during the Winter Olympics. Washington and Pyongyang last month agreed on Singapore as the venue for the first-ever meeting between the leaders of the two countries. The White House said Singapore, which has good relations with both Washington and Pyongyang, beat out other contenders like Mongolia and Korea's Demilitarized Zone because it could ensure the security of both leaders and provide a neutral meeting ground.
