2018 World Cup: Expectations low in England as Three Lions prepare for opener

England kick off their World Cup campaign on Tuesday with probably less expectation than usual. With a very young squad, few experts see them going very deep in the tournament, but that's just how manager Gareth Southgate prefers to have it. CGTN's Richard Bestic caught up with some fans of the Three Lions, who say they have learned from England's past experiences at major tournaments.
England has made a habit of leaving their fans underwhelmed. And with the third youngest squad in the tournament, even Gareth Southgate says this world cup will be a bit of a learning curve.
GARETH SOUTHGATE ENGLAND MANAGER "We know they're not the finished article, we know that we don't have the number of caps or experience that the Germans have, the Brazilians have, the Spanish have, but that's where we are at the moment as a country."
England has some special players in their ranks, which could prove game changing. England Captain and the English Premier League's Golden Boot star Harry Kane has a reputation for setting the field alight. His 24 caps for the Three Lions have yielded 13 goals – albeit none at a major tournament. Manchester United's Marcus Rashford is England's boy wonder. The 20-year-old has returned to training after suffering a knee injury in practice. Rashford scored in England's final warm-up game against Costa Rica to claim his third goal in 19 international appearances. Another standout performer, Man City star Raheem Sterling. The 23-year-old midfielder's confidence continuing to rise.
RICHARD BESTIC WEMBLEY "England's sending a pricey squad, worth a billion dollars in Premier League transfer fees, but here at Wembley, the home of English football, fans are cautious."
"Look at the past few tournaments, we've done absolutely terrible. We should have done well but it just never happened on the day."
"Before it has always been too many stars in the team. This year - young team, no expectations, go most of the way."
"I'm not overly confident. (Tell me why?) Cause I don't think we're that good."
There's another cloud hanging over England. Since the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia relations between Russia and England have reached a new low. Russian fans have run into England in the past and there are fears they may target them this time round. England has failed to win a single knockout match in the World Cup for more than a decade.
RICHARD BESTIC WEMBLEY "But you know, here in the mother country they're hoping for the best, even if it's just getting out of the group stages and winning at least one match in the knockout stages. RB, CGTN, the home of English football, Wembley."
