Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Laotian counterpart Bounnhang Vorachit on Tuesday attended the groundbreaking ceremony for a China-sponsored hospital in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos.
The Chinese president is on a state visit to Laos, the first by a Chinese head of state to the country in 11 years.
Mahosot hospital was built in 1910, and run by French doctors. Now it will be renovated.
Lao officials said the new facility will be four to five stories high and will operate in line with international standards after it is completed.
Of all the hospitals China has helped build overseas, this is the biggest, with a bedding capacity of 600, according to the Chinese media.
The Chinese government will also provide modern medical equipment for all the wards and will assist in staff training. The renovation is set to complete in 2022.
