Syria Attack: UNSC rejects Russian resolution calling for condemnation of strikes
[]
Deep divisions are on display at the UN. As the Security Council rejected a Russian resolution calling for the condemnation of the US and its allies' aggression. CGTN's Nick Harper has the details from New York.
NICK HARPER NEW YORK "The battle lines very clearly drawn at the UN Security Council. Once again the 5th emergency meeting of the week when it came to Syrian matters. The US Ambassador Nikki Haley said it was justified legitimate and proportionate to carry out these air strikes, saying that there had been opportunities in the past for diplomacy, but the time for talk ended last night."
VASILY NEBENZYA RUSSIAN AMBASSADOR TO THE UN "We call on the US and its allies to immediately end the aggressive actions in Syria and to refrain from them in the future."
NIKKI HALEY US AMBASSADOR TO THE UN "I spoke to the president this morning, he said if the Syrian regime uses this poisonous gas again, the United States is locked and loaded. When our president draws a red line, our president enforces the red line."
China says this is a violation of UN Charter, the ambassador warning that it could further handicap the Syrian conflict.
MA ZHAOXU CHINESE AMBASSADOR TO THE UN "Any unilateral action bypassing the Security Council runs counter to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and violates the principles of the international law and the basic norms governing international relations, and will further complicate the Syrian issue."
So there're fears as what may now happen and what the next step could be for the UNSC. He said he hopes to find an effective way to accelerate the political process, because it's clear that in the UNSC, currently there's no way forward. NH, CGTN, NY.
