The United States announced it's withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council accusing it of chronic bias against Israel. The US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, said the decision was made after a long year of efforts to shame the council into reform and to remove member states that themselves commit abuses. DANIEL RYNTJES has more.
DANIEL RYNTJES WASHINGTON Nikki Haley says she's working for years for reforms against two key concerns. Firstly, there's an institutional bias against Israel. Secondly, in fact that some states US believes are human rights abusers are sitting on that council. This is what she has to say.
NIKKI HALEY US AMBASSADOR TO THE UN "As we said we would do a year ago, if we did not see any progress, the United States is officially withdrawing from the U.N. Human Rights Council. In doing so, I want to make it crystal clear that this step is not a retreat from human rights commitments, on the contrary, we take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of human rights."
