Earlier my colleague Mike Walter spoke to Michael Planey, an Airline Technology Consultant in Washington, about technical causes for this tragedy.
MIKE WALTER WASHINGTON "What contributes to sth like this?"
MICHAEL PLANEY AIRLINE TECHNOLOGY CONSULTANT "Eyewitness reports were that the aircraft shortly after takeoff took a hard bank to the right, but unfortunately whatever happened here were so serious and unset so quickly that it was unrecoverable."
MIKE WALTER WASHINGTON "How about the age of the plane, is it a concern?"
MICHAEL PLANEY AIRLINE TECHNOLOGY CONSULTANT "It is always a concern. The aircraft was 38 years 11 months old according to Boeing's data. Like the engines, the airframe itself, the flight controls. So I think that would be one of the first things they start to look into whether it's the Boeing technical team, or whether we are talking about Cuban authority."
