The ongoing COP24 climate summit in Poland has created an opportunity for German businesses, to introduce more green technology to Africa. Ira Spitzer has this report.
Germany hopes to ride its expertise in green technology all the way to Africa. Concepts like this electric cargo bike, sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy projects have piqued the interest of African officials.
SAMUEL ATTA AKYEA, WORKS AND HOUSING MINISTER GHANA "The good German technologies that can affect Accra, Ghana and Africa in general, we want to know them. And when we know them and we are teachable enough, we'll be able to apply them."
This conference is part of a recent push by the government to increase private sector cooperation on the African continent.
IRA SPITZER BERLIN, GERMANY "Germany's development minister has said that he plans to unveil an initiative at COP24 geared towards developing countries, many of which are in Africa. That initiative is based around boosting private investment in renewables and other climate-related projects."
Germany is playing catch-up to China, which has invested heavily in African infrastructure in recent years. Still, event organizers are optimistic they've found a niche.
STEFAN LIEBING, CHAIRPERSON GERMAN-AFRICAN BUSINESS ASSOCIATION "You also have more complicated energy grids, communication grids, etc. that are needed where maybe German industry can be more competitive than when it comes to pure road constructions."
Liebing also foresees opportunities to partner with Chinese firms. However, challenges remain -- including changing the perception in Germany that African investments are risky. While African countries haven't been the main drivers of climate change, they will certainly feel the effects. And Germany believes its technology has a key role to play in addressing this global challenge. Ira Spitzer, CGTN, Berlin, Germany.
