Donald Trump says things are moving "very nicely" towards the Singapore summit on June 12th with the DPRK leader Kim Jong Un.
The US president says there's a "lot of goodwill" for the meeting, and a lot of people are working on it. Trump says they are looking at the summit and that hasn't changed. The US president's latest remarks came after the DPRK said Kim was "fixed" on holding the summit. On Saturday, the White House announced it's sending an advance team of about 30 officials to Singapore to prepare. Our Washington correspondent Nathan King has more.
Late Friday in Washington US President Donald Trump hinted that the summit he'd just cancelled may be back on, tweeting "We are having very productive talks with North Korea about reinstating the summit which, if it does happen, will likely remain in Singapore on the same date, June 12th, and, if necessary, will be extended beyond that date." But he did not mention or perhaps did not know, that for the second time in just over month, the leaders of the two Koreas were set to meet again- this time on the northern side of the border. So what does this intense Diplomatic dance mean for the Trump-Kim Jong Un summit? Well, the White House announced just after the new Kim Jong Un Moon Jae-in meeting that it was sending an advance team of about 30 officials to Singapore to prepare for a summit. This, just two days after White House officials warned, after Trump pulled out of the June 12th date, that reinstating that date might be unrealistic. 'It's in like 10 minutes', one official said. Trump took to Twitter Saturday again to deny that any official said that- and he also rejected news reports that his administration is divided over the wisdom of the summit, saying in part "there is ZERO disagreement within the Trump Administration as to how to deal with North Korea and if there was, it wouldn't matter."
