China has announced retaliatory duties of 25-percent on 659 American products, worth about 50 billion U.S. dollars. The announcement came hours after Washington approved to go ahead with tariffs on Chinese imports. Analysts say that China has the legitimate right to protect its own interests and defend the world trading order within the framework of WTO rules.
YU LU CHINA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE "The United States is truly fickle over trade matters as it completely ignored the previous negotiations between the two sides and eventually chose to slap additional tariffs. Such an action goes against the interests of both China and the U.S., and of course it is a kind of violation of the global trade order."
XU JIABIN CHINA COUNCIL FOR PROMOTION OF INT'L TRADE "Launching such kind of trade war is actually an outdated and backward practice. It goes against the law of globalization."
LI YONG, DEPUTY DIRECTOR CHINA ASSOCIATION OF INT'L TRADE "China's retaliation is based on our Foreign Trade Law and WTO rules. China does not choose to take such measures itself. It is the rightful reaction in response to U.S. actions."
MEI XINYU, RESEARCHER CHINESE ACADEMY OF INT'L TRADE AND ECONOMIC COOPERATION "The trade war is not started by us. The doings of the United States directly damage China's legitimate interests. Therefore, of course, China will take actions to defend its lawful right, and to let the one starting the trade war pay dear prices, so that it will come back to the right track."
