German Election: Chancellor Merkel sworn in for fourth term in office

German chancellor Angela Merkel has taken the oath of office. As Guy Henderson reports: she was elected for a fourth term in the parliament on Wednesday.
Germany's parliament approved Angela Merkel's fourth term: but 315 voted against. Stronger opposition could be the norm from here on in. Though perhaps protests like these might be less common: the session interrupted by an observer in the public gallery holding up a sign saying "Merkel must go" before being escorted out. Even as the Chancellor left the building, there was a little extra drama. "Help me Mrs Merkel" - this man yelled: as plain-clothed police officers moved in. His agenda not entirely clear. Critics say the government's isn't either. So after signing the coalition deal on Monday, leaders pledged to bring clarity as soon as possible on key policies like European reform.
OLAF SCHOLZ INTERIM LEADER OF SOCIAL DEMOCRATS "I am convinced we all need to be a bit more daring in this regard, and be a bit more 'outspoken', and define a perspective that can be put into consensus. I imagine that this has to be done in very close cooperation with France."
Any lack of consensus may not only come from increased domestic political tensions.
ANGELA MERKEL GERMAN CHANCELLOR "I said already in 2012 or 2013 that I could imagine something like a European investment budget. But we have to take into account that the range of ideas from - let's say Finland to France, Italy, Ireland, Germany - are not prepared in great detail."
This is the cabinet the Chancellor says will bring Germans a stable government after 6 months of waiting. Stability's not all the public want though.
GUY HENDERSON BERLIN "This new government knows German voters want change - and yet delivering it won't be easy. There'll be stiffer opposition in parliament for starters, but it's also clear there are deep disagreements within the so-called Grand Coalition over which direction Germany, and Europe, should be heading next. GH, CGTN, BERLIN."
