On Sunday the government of Catalonia held a controversial referendum to break away from Spain and establish the region as an independent state. Madrid deemed the referendum illegal and Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said it had made a "mockery" of democracy. While the future of Catalonia may still be up in the air, it isn’t the only part of Western Europe where separatist sentiments exist.
