Tokyo resident Tomoko Fujii lives a zero energy lifestyle and hasn't had an electricity bill for five years
Fujii’s house has three solar panels installed on the balcony. They generate more than one kWh of electricity each sunny day. Fujii also generates electricity by riding a bike linked to an electric generator.
To store food, she fills a container with water which keeps it cool and a bag dripping water helps to cool down the room on hot days.
A typical Japanese household pays a monthly utility bill of around 4,000 yen or 37 US dollars.
But Fujii consumes less than one tenth of the energy used by others.
