Several towns in Italy have launched a unique campaign to revitalize their communities. Some houses have been put up for sale for a shocking price of one Euro. For people eager to run-away from the stress of an urban city, it may be the perfect spot to buy a house. What's the catch? CGTN's Michal Bardavid takes us to one of these towns to find out.
Fabbriche di Vergemoli is one of the towns participating in the "buy a house for one Euro" campaign in Italy. The town is surrounded by mountains and beautiful forests.
MICHAL BARDAVID TUSCANY "The town of Fabbriche di Vergemoli is located within a UNESCO Global Geopark, though it may seem remote, it's actually just a 20 minute drive to the cities of Lucca, Pistoia and Pisa home to the world famous leaning tower and just an hour away is the city of Florence, capital of Tuscany."
At first sight, it may seem like the town has been abandoned, with businesses closed and few people on the streets, but that is part of the problem. Over the years, young local residents have moved to metropolitan areas and that resulted in the decrease of the population.
The one euro houses on sale have decayed and need renovation. Some don't even have a rooftop. But since it's prohibited to build new houses in Tuscany, renovating an old cottage house is an opportunity. Buying a house here doesn't come with the condition to become a resident and can be used as a vacation house, but the buyer must pledge to renovate it which experts say cost up to about $50,000 dollars. Adriano has lived in this town all his life, he is one of the sellers.
ADRIANO SELLER OF ONE-EURO HOUSE "I sell the house because I am sorry to see it fall."
Marco is the manager of a local construction company. He is happy to buy a home and has been involved in renovating several houses in the area. He says there are many ways to create a dream house here.
MARCO PIERONI BUYER OF ONE-EURO HOUSE "The house can be a very warm inside thanks to the use of materials such as wood and stone. Outside, we can also create small pools recreating the style of a river, and build panoramic terraces in order to admire the surrounding landscape."
The mayor vows to support any buyer with the bureaucratic process.
MICHELE GIANNINI, MAYOR FABBRICHE DI VERGEMOLI "There are no difficulties in buying a one-euro house here at Fabbriche because we will support you in everything you must do. We just go to a notary and do the contract, and for every step the office will be next to you to do what is necessary."
Stephen is a British artist who renovated a large compound before the one euro campaign launched in Fabbriche di Vergemoli. He describes life in town.
STEPHEN BRITISH CITIZEN "We're in a tiny little village that has three really good restaurants. We do opera up here, we do concerts. There's plenty of historic culture and modern culture, but there's a lot of time where it's just quiet and you have to want that."
Though life in a Italian town may not be for everyone, for the price offered – even with the costs of restoration – it certainly seems like a great opportunity for those who can afford it. Michal Bardavid, CGTN, Tuscany.
