It's the final weekend of campaigning ahead of Tuesday's midterm election. And both sides are looking to win over voters. US President Donald Trump says his governing Republic Party plans to court one group in particular: African Americans. CGTN's Jim Spellman reports.
With midterms just days away, election polls show African American voters are largely united around their dislike for U.S. President Donald Trump. Dan Reed is a Democratic voter in Maryland.
DAN REED DEMOCRATIC VOTER "It is clear that he has such disdain for people of color."
Henry Fernandez leads the African American Research Collaborative, a political consulting firm that has conducted extensive polling of African Americans heading into the midterms.
HENRY FERNANDEZAFRICAN AMERICAN RESEARCH COLLABORATIVE "Number one issue certainly is Donald Trump. African-Americans in our polling, but also in polling by other companies, really don't like Donald Trump. Particularly African-American women feel that Donald Trump is disrespectful and the emotion that Donald Trump generates, the two big emotions are anger on the one hand and disrespect on the other."
Sixty-nine-year old Democrat Donna Graham-Harris isn't shy about what she thinks of the president.
DONNA GRAHAM-HARRISDEMOCRATIC VOTER "That's how I feel when I see him on TV, I just wanna slap him silly."
She came of age during the civil rights movement of the 1960s.
DONNA GRAHAM-HARRIS DEMOCRATIC VOTER "I was around with Nixon and Reagan. They never disrespected us. They may not have liked us, to a certain degree, but they did not disrespect us as a race."
Trump courted the black vote during his presidential campaign.
DONALD TRUMP US PRESIDENT "What the hell do you have to give me a chance."
As president, he often brags about low black unemployment. But polling suggests most African Americans haven't seen a significant rise in wages, and they don't credit Trump for the strong economy."
DAN REED DEMOCRATIC VOTER "He has inherited these improving economic conditions because of President Obama, and he certainly doesn't deserve credit for them."
KANYE WESTMUSICIAN "There was something about when I put this hat on. It made me feel like Superman."
Trump has welcomed the support of high-profile African Americans like rapper Kanye West.
HENRY FERNANDEZ AFRICAN AMERICAN RESEARCH COLLABORATIVE "We've actually polled this question in particular, whether or not African-American voters, how they feel about Kanye West supporting Donald Trump. Kanye West actually has a negative impact on black voters with regard to their perceptions of Trump."
But disdain for Trump alone may not be enough to drive high African American turnout.
HENRY FERNANDEZ AFRICAN AMERICAN RESEARCH COLLABORATIVE "Democrats certainly are always going to get the majority of the black vote. But that's not enough. It's not a question of what percentage of the black vote they get is what percentage of the black vote turns out to vote. And that really comes down to issues."
JIM SPELLMANWASHINGTON DC "Fernandez says African American turnout will come down to whether candidates have been speaking to the issues black voters care about including tighter gun control measures, expanded health care coverage and a raise in the national minimum wage."
DONNA GRAHAM-HARRIS DEMOCRATIC VOTER "I love this country and I pray that the Democrats whether you're old, young, black, white, purple, green or blue that you will get out and vote."
