Cuba's National Assembly has named First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel as successor to President Raul Castro. This will be the island's first non-Castro leader in 60 years. The 57-year-old will formally be confirmed as the country's leader on Thursday morning.
UK Prime Minister Theresa May has welcomed guests to the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which is being held in London for the first time in two decades. The Commonwealth is an association of the UK and its former colonies and includes 53 countries such as India. Speaking at Wednesday's reception, May stressed the grouping's strength and diversity.
And the US Federal Aviation Administration says it would order the inspection of some 220 jet engines. It comes after investigators said a broken fan blade sparked off an engine explosion on a Southwest Airlines flight, shattering a window and killing a passenger.
