Indian police have arrested 15 men on suspicion of raping and burning a 16-year-old girl to death. The girl was kidnapped from a wedding in Chatra, eastern India on Thursday. Police say she was set on fire after her parents complained to elders that she had been sexually assaulted.
SHWETA BAJAJ NEW DEHLI "Fifteen people, including the main accused, have been arrested in connection with the rape and killing of a minor girl. The girl was killed by setting her on fire said the police from the state of Jharkhand. The girl was declared brought dead by doctors. She was rushed to the nearby hospital, when she was rushed to a nearby hospital on Friday, police said."
The rape case was brought to the notice of the local village body and the body imposed a fine of approximately 900 US dollars and ordered to do 100 sit-ups. In India, village bodies play a very big role in solving disputes. Legally they don't have a standing but within the village communities they are powerful.
Humiliated and angry with the decision, the accused refused to do the same and went to the house of the victim with other people. The girls parents were beaten brutally by them and then the girl was set on fire in front of the parents. The accused is said to be known to the family.
The Chief minister of the state has announced a financial aid to the girl's family and arrangements were made for her funeral. The situation has led to protests again. Just a few days back a rape of a 8 year old girl had sparked nation wide protests. Reportage of rape cases in India has climbed up in the past few years in India. Many still go unreported. Of the reported cases almost 40 per cent are child rapes.
There is an anger in the country where stories of rapes of children and women have become an everyday affairs. The anger is only rising against the failure of the state in providing safety to citizens in everyday life. The Indian government announce last moth death penalty of rapes of girls under the age of 12.
