The rape case was brought to the notice of the local village body and the body imposed a fine of approximately 900 US dollars and ordered to do 100 sit-ups. In India, village bodies play a very big role in solving disputes. Legally they don't have a standing but within the village communities they are powerful.
Humiliated and angry with the decision, the accused refused to do the same and went to the house of the victim with other people. The girls parents were beaten brutally by them and then the girl was set on fire in front of the parents. The accused is said to be known to the family.
The Chief minister of the state has announced a financial aid to the girl's family and arrangements were made for her funeral. The situation has led to protests again. Just a few days back a rape of a 8 year old girl had sparked nation wide protests. Reportage of rape cases in India has climbed up in the past few years in India. Many still go unreported. Of the reported cases almost 40 per cent are child rapes.
There is an anger in the country where stories of rapes of children and women have become an everyday affairs. The anger is only rising against the failure of the state in providing safety to citizens in everyday life. The Indian government announce last moth death penalty of rapes of girls under the age of 12.
