First up is football from here in China's capital, as Beijing Renhe hosted seven-time CSL champions Guangzhou Evergrande, who have not been looking themselves as of late, and would find no answers to their problems in this city. Benjamin Moukandjo and Augusto Fernandez both scored in the first 15 minutes, as Renhe pulled off a stunning 2-0 victory. That extends Evergrande's winless run to six games in all competitions, and the league's two-month hiatus couldn't be more timely for the title holders. Damion Jones elaborates.
Guangzhou Evergrande strode into Fengtai Stadium hoping to jumpstart what has been a lackluster campaign, in their final match before the Chinese Super League takes an eight-week break for the FIFA World Cup. But Beijing Renhe would show why they are a team on the rise, aggressively putting the Cantonians on the back foot from the opening whistle, and leaving the visitors reeling.
LUIS GARCIA BEIJING RENHE COACH "I think we are playing well against the big teams like SIPG, like Hebei, like Tianjin. We had good results, but the team I think is playing well in the matches, so it's no different playing against a big team or a small team."
The 2-0 defeat has Guangzhou winless on the road against this year's promoted clubs, after also falling 3-0 at Dalian Yifang two weeks ago, and majority owner Hui Ka-yan (Xu Jiayin) has seen enough. He called Evergrande's locker room right after the game to say adjustments are forthcoming and no player, foreign or domestic, is guaranteed to still be around two months from now.
ZHENG ZHI GUANGZHOU EVERGRANDE CAPTAIN "I think our boss feels anxious, and he wants to give the squad a wake-up call. To be honest, we have not played well in the first 11 league games, and everybody should take responsibility on our team. So the break is very important for us, because we need to do better in our upcoming matches, and our only goal is to earn another CSL championship."
FABIO CANNAVARO GUANGZHOU EVERGRANDE COACH "If the boss would like to change things, that's what we're going to do, and we need to see how to handle that. We thought things might be difficult early in the season, but we never imagined it would be this hard. The upcoming break is very important for us, and we plan to use that time to make all the necessary corrections."
Finding a way to climb up from fifth place, and rally for an eighth consecutive CSL title, will be Guangzhou's main motivation going forward, with Evergrande already eliminated from both the Chinese F.A. Cup, and the AFC Champions League -- a sustained run of success that started in 2011 -- in danger of ending, with an ignominious thud.
DAMION JONES BEIJING "So Renhe's astonishing 2-0 win seems to be the final catalyst to prompt sweeping changes at Guangzhou Evergrande, as the seven-time champions search to regain their customary form, while the newcomers from the capital now have even more confidence that they can keep moving up in the table, when the CSL season resumes after the World Cup Break.
