The Republic of Korea (ROK) approved on Thursday a plan to provide eight million US dollars in humanitarian aid to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), despite the growing tensions on the Korean Peninsula caused by Pyongyang's accelerated missile launches and nuclear tests.
The decision was made following the latest UN resolution that imposed further sanctions on the DPRK in response to its sixth nuclear test and the most powerful to date.
Seoul said its aid policy remains unaffected by the tensions with the DPRK. The package includes nutritional products worth 4.5 million US dollars and vaccines and medicine valued at 3.5 million US dollars.
The government's attempts to aid the DPRK have drawn opposition from the public and opposition parties, with recent polls showing a dip in South Korean President Moon Jae-in's approval rating.
