Cameron Mackintosh's 20th century re-telling of the Madame Butterfly story in which the tale moves to the Vietnam War is back on tour with dates up and down UK, Ireland and Zurich for 13 months. Our reporter Xi Jia brings us more.
Still a thrilling moment when the helicopter flies onto the stage. Nearly 30 years since its debut, MISS SAIGON still captivates audiences the way it always has.
MISS SAIGON tells the story of the final days of the Vietnam War. 17-year-old Kim is forced to work in a Saigon bar run by a notorious character known as the Engineer. There she meets and falls in love with an American G.I. named Chris, but they are torn apart by the fall of Saigon. For 3 years Kim goes on an epic journey of survival to find her way back to Chris, who has no idea he's fathered a son.
This MISS SAIGON tour started last October and continues through January, with stops in the UK, Ireland and Zurich, and it is welcomed almost everywhere it plays.
MISS SAIGON has performed in 28 countries, over 300 cities and in 15 different languages. It has won over 40 awards including 2 Olivier Awards, 3 Tony's, and 4 Drama Desk Awards. In the late 80's, the story was fairly recent history. 29 later, the issues it portrays are still very real and worldly.
XI JIA BRISTOL, UK "Since its London premiere in 1989, Cameron Mackintosh's production of MISS SAIGON has become one of the most successful musicals in theatrical history. Having attracted over 35 million people worldwide, the historic tale figures to keep shining in the world of musicals. Xi Jia, CGTN, Bristol, UK."
