About 200 children of migrant laborers who have moved to the Chinese city of Harbin in search of work were treated to an all-expenses-paid trip to an ice theme park on Wednesday.
Most of the kids were born far away from frigid Harbin, capital of the northeastern Heilongjiang Province. Many of them had never seen snow and ice before, let alone giant sculptures and slides made from the stuff as part of the 43rd Harbin Ice Lantern Fair.
China has identified migrant workers’ children as a vulnerable group. The millions of Chinese adults drawn away from their hometowns for work generally used to leave their kids behind. But the government has recently started encouraging migrant workers to relocate with their families.
The local government in Heilongjiang hopes that incentives like this free trip will help families feel more welcome in their new adopted cities.
