The Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation is kicking off tomorrow. My colleague Tian Wei sat down with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa who took office in February. Ramaphosa said Africa supports a multilateral trading system and China is an equal and important partner to African countries. He also believes that Belt and Road Initiative boosts local infrastructure, investment and trade.
TIAN WEI "South Africa is the co-host country of this year's FOCAC. When we talk about the economy, of course we are not talking about our own economies these days anymore. It's about how together we can do the win-win result. How do you see the significance of this year's meeting? At a critical juncture apparently. When you have geopolitical changes going on. Quite dramatically in the world. And when you have a huge debate about where the world to go. Whether it's about trade mechanism, or it's about partnerships?"
TIAN WEI "How to make sure the nature of relationship be able to be implemented into very specific projects. Belt and Road initiative is one of the initiatives that China and South Africa are working on. South Africa is important on the maritime silk road. It's only five years in the making. Where is it, according to your assessment, the cooperation from both side on connectivity as a general concept."
